Statistical Inference Without Frequentist Justifications
نویسنده
چکیده
Statistical inference is often justified by long-run properties of the sampling distributions, such as the repeated sampling rationale. These are frequentist justifications of statistical inference. I argue, in line with existing philosophical literature, but against a widespread image in empirical science, that these justifications are flawed. Then I propose a novel interpretation of probability in statistics, the artefactual interpretation. I believe that this interpretation is able to bridge the gap between statistical probability calculations and rational decisions on the basis of observed data. The artefactual interpretation is able to justify statistical inference without making any assumptions about probability in the material world. 1 Frequentist Statistics and Frequentists Justi-

Confidence Intervals for Population Ranks in the Presence of Ties and near Ties
Frequentist confidence intervals for population ranks and their statistical justifications are not well established, even though there is a great need for such procedures in practice. How do we assign confidence bounds for the ranks of health care facilities, schools and financial institutions based on data that do not clearly separate the performance of different entities apart? The commonly u...
متن کاملPreprint of the Book Chapter : “ Bayesian Versus Frequentist Inference ” Eric
The first goal of this chapter is to highlight why frequentist inference is a less-thanideal method for statistical inference. The most fundamental limitation of standard frequentist inference is that it does not condition on the observed data. The resulting paradoxes have sparked a philosophical debate that statistical practitioners have conveniently ignored. What cannot be so easily ignored a...
متن کاملBayesian Versus Frequentist Inference
1 Goals and Outline Throughout this book, the topic of order-restricted inference is dealt with almost exclusively from a Bayesian perspective. Some readers may wonder why the other main school for statistical inference – frequentist inference – has received so little attention here. Isn't it true that in the field of psychology, almost all inference is frequentist inference? The first goal of ...
متن کاملNew Perspectives on (Some Old) Problems of Frequentist Statistics Frequentist Statistics as a Theory of Inductive Inference1
The philosophical foundations of statistics may be regarded as the study of the epistemological, conceptual and logical problems revolving around the use and interpretation of statistical methods, broadly conceived. As with other domains of philosophy of science, work in statistical science progresses largely without worrying about “philosophical foundations.” Nevertheless, even in statistical ...
متن کاملReconciling Frequentist Properties with the Likelihood Principle
SUMMARY For the general problem of parametric statistical inference, several frequentist principles are formulated, including principles which apply to the problems of hypothesis testing, set estimation, predictive inference and conditional inference. These principles give a frequentist interpretation to measures of uncertainty and they guarantee that, whatever the true parameter value, statist...
